As mentioned earlier, I am trying to identify sounds produced by birds. When it comes to the familiarity with a variety of bird species, I still have a long way to go. As far as plants are concerned, my knowledge is even more pedestrian.
Luckily, designers of the Nyandungu Urban Eco-Tourism Park have put useful information at the visitors’ disposal. This outing is an effective study tour. Highly recommended for fitness and nature enthusiasts.
Scientific and Kinyarwanda names of different plants are displayed along the lanes. So is the family and medicinal use of each plant. Naming plants is a complex process. It involves the combination of scientific and traditional practices.
Scientific names of plants are derived from their genus and species. Genus is a group of plants that share similar characteristics. Species, on the other hand, has to do with distinctive features that distinguish a specific plant from the rest of the group.
Studying plants is slowing me down. This walk will take longer than expected. After the tour, I am looking forward to grabbing something to eat from Nyandungu Restaurant and kick back on one of those benches placed in the recreational area.
Speaking of benches, I am writing this piece from one of them. The bench I am occupying right now is found in Sector III of the park. I still have two more sectors to cover before embarking on the return leg through the bamboo forest.
