While hiking around the twin lakes, tourists get a glimpse into the mystery behind the formation of the lakes and their deviation from the Congo Basin to the extensive Nile water catchment area.

Hiking around the Twin Lakes can be combined with boating and a lunch break on Peace Haven Island. Camping on the island is highly recommended for a comprehensive experience.

CAMPING ON PEACE HAVEN ISLAND

****

This tiny islet, found in Lake Ruhondo, is an embordiment of tranquility. Escaping to Peace Haven Island is the best way to reclaim your lost peace of mind.

Upon arrival, you will be awestruck by the beauty of the 360° vista of the lake and the backdrop of its surrounding hills.

At night, lit lanterns from fishing canoes look like twinkling pieces of diamond sprinkled on a dark surface. When you unzip your tent in the morning, the view of the towering volcanoes will take your breath away.

BIRDWATCHING

*****

BGE offers tailor-made birding tours on the banks of Mukungwa River and Mpenge tributary. This area is home to a wide range of water and highland species.

This experience trascends birdwatching. It is a profound remainder of nature's boundless beauty. It will undoubtedly invoke your sense of wonder and affinity to nature.

FISHING EXPERIENCE

Fishing is one of the economic activities carried out by the people living around the Twin Lakes. The art of fishing, as practiced by many Rwandan fishermen, is quite intriguing.

A fishing experience is an opportunity to acquire a new skill and learn valuable lessons from those who do it for a living. Some of the lessons one can draw from fishing are the importance of teamwork, motivation, and patience.

Furthermore, this activity will give you a glimpse into a different way of life and enable you to connect with members of your host community in a special way.
